A Nightmare on Elm Street is a 1984 horror film that spawned a franchise centered around the supernatural killer Freddy Krueger who has the ability to pull people into dreams in order to kill them.

- The Muppet Babies episode "Elm Street Babies" takes its name from the movie and centers on a story in which the babies wake up in the middle of the night from bad dreams.
- During an August 2001 appearance on Hollywood Squares, Kermit is asked, "Johnny Depp, Patricia Arquette, and Laurence Fishburne all appear in which classic horror series: Friday the 13th, Halloween, or Nightmare on Elm Street?" Kermit ponders for a moment and provides the third option as the correct answer.
- In the blooper reel included on The Muppets' Wizard of Oz DVD, Kermit says he looks like Freddy Krueger because of the way his hands have been positioned.
