Stang's mad scientist

Arnold Stang (1918-2009) was a character actor known for his bespectacled, gawky appearance and distinctive nasal, New York-accented voice, heard in everything from radio and TV to commercials and cartoons.

Although his best known voice role was that of Top Cat for Hanna-Barbera, Stang's voice also visited Sesame Street, as a mad scientist (with a slight German tinge, keeping with stereotypes) who invents a capital letter H. (First: Episode 0284)

Stang's radio career included a regular stint on The Henry Morgan Show as the aggressive Gerard and played a similar irritant on Milton Berle's radio show. He followed Berle to TV, as his stagehand nemesis Francis (who frequently smacked him in the face with a powder puff in response to the phrase "make up," a gag reused when Berle appeared in The Muppet Show episode 203).

Stang lent his voice to Herman the mouse in Famous Studios theatrical shorts and was heard in the animated feature Raggedy Ann and Andy and episodes of Reading Rainbow and The Puzzle Place. Films include It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (where he encounters Jonathan Winters in close combat), The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (as Rumpelstiltskin), Hercules in New York (receiving top billing over a young Arnold Schwarzenegger), and Dennis the Menace.
