As I Was Going to St. Ives is a nursery rhyme which has been around since the 1700s, though the subject has been thought to originate from the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus. Often considered a riddle, the most common form of the rhyme is as follow,
The rhyme was performed as a song in the first season of Sesame Street, to illustrate the number 7. Two Anything Muppets, a Purple boy (performed by Jim Henson) and a Green girl (Frank Oz), test each other's wits as he tries to get her to solve the riddle. She ends up turning the tables on him by revealing how many were going the other way (a total of 2,801). (First: Episode 0045)
