Ava DuVernay (b. 1972) is a film director best known for directing the historical drama Selma about Martin Luther King Jr.
In August 2022, DuVernay appeared in a Coming Together video on Sesame Street’s YouTube channel with Elmo and Ji-Young to talk about the word "proud" (YouTube). She appeared on the show itself during Season 53, with Big Bird, Elmo, and Little Red Riding Hood (debuting in Episode 5316). The previous year, she'd teased the visit on her Instagram account with behind-the-scenes photos and with the characters on set, as well as a brief video.[1]
She directed Disney's adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time (with Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling), and, for TV, has directed episodes of Scandal (with Kerry Washington), When They See Us (with Felicity Huffman), Colin in Black & White (with Nick Offerman), and DMZ (with Rosario Dawson). She also developed the DC Comics series Naomi and co-created Queen Sugar (with Oprah Winfrey).
