Avner Katz (1939–2020) was an Israeli artist and illustrator who played Avner on Rechov Sumsum (the Israeli co-production of Sesame Street) from 1983 to 1986. While his character Avner ran the street's bakery, he painted as a hobby, reflecting Katz's artistic background.[1]
Off-camera, Katz designed Kippi Ben Kippod for the series, wrote scripts, and wrote and illustrated the 1984 children's book One Day on Rechov Sumsum.
Katz contributed satirical cartoons to the daily newspaper Davar and wrote and illustrated several children's books. Some of these were translated into English, including Tortoise Solves a Problem (1993) and The Little Pickpocket (1993). He supplied art for record covers and posters, and his paintings have been displayed at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
