Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was a British children's book author and illustrator whose stories featured anthropomorphic animals. Her first and most famous story, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, was initially self-published. Other notable titles, often with whimsical multisyllabic names for the characters, include The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, and The Tale of Two Bad Mice.
Potter drew on her research and illustrations drawn from the natural sciences for her work. Particularly interested in mycology (the study of fungi), she deeded many of her related illustrations and other scientific artwork to the Armitt Museum in Cumbria, where it is part of a permanent exhibition.
