Bedtime Stories & Songs title card.

Bedtime Stories & Songs is a 1986 Sesame Street direct-to-video compilation, released on VHS as part of the My Sesame Street Home Video label. The video was re-released with different segments under the new title of Sleepytime Songs & Stories in 1996, and on DVD in 2005.

The framing story involves Big Bird speaking to the audience, offering advice on the best ways to fall asleep, with many characters stopping by throughout the video.

FRAME 1 Big Bird welcomes the viewers as he gets ready for bed. Because he believes the viewers tuning in aren't asleep yet, he gives some demonstrations on some good ways to get settled in and relaxed, but his demonstrations only work on birds. Eventually, he finds a way that works for everyone.... to which he then falls asleep.

FRAME 2 As Big Bird is asleep, a mother Honker and her baby stop by, and the mother lets Big Bird know it's past the baby's bedtime, but she won't go to sleep. Big Bird advises the baby to count sheep, but she doesn't know how to count. Instead, they imagine Count von Count counting sheep.
Muppets The Count imagines a fence and counts sheep jumping over it.

FRAME 3 To the mother's relief, the baby Honker has fallen asleep. She blows a kiss to Big Bird and walks off, as Big Bird is asleep again.

FRAME 4 As Big Bird continues to sleep, Telly Monster stops by and wakes him up to remind him that he invited him for a sleepover. As they get ready for their sleepover, Telly brings his endless amount of stuffed animal toys that help him go to sleep.

FRAME 5 Now buried in a big amount of Telly's stuffed animal toys, Big Bird demonstrates his next method of falling asleep: Finding something soft to cuddle up with. Big Bird and Telly then fall fast asleep.

FRAME 6 While Big Bird and Telly are fast asleep, Buster the Horse stops by and comments on their way of sleeping, surprised from the matter. Susan peeks out the window and asks Buster what he's doing. He mentions his confusion on how Big Bird and Telly fell asleep the way they did, and demonstrates to Susan his own way of falling asleep, much to her own surprise.

FRAME 7 While Telly is sleeping, Big Bird is now wide awake again. He begins to explain his methods of falling asleep again, but then quickly falls right back to sleep before he can finish. A lullaby version of the theme plays as the credits roll.
