Beowulf is an epic poem detailing the title hero's journey and fight against monsters. The work is of unknown authorship and uncertain date (late 10th or early 11th century) and was written in Old English, although the actual narrative is set in medieval Scandinavia. As an early fantasy epic, Beowulf influenced J.R.R. Tolkien, who wrote his own posthumously published translation, while the 1971 novel Grendel offered a postmodern and philosophical take from the perspective of Grendel, the first slain monster.
