A butterfly is a winged insect. In their larvae stage they are known as caterpillars.
Butterflies have been featured in several sketches on The Muppet Show, including the "Elusive Butterfly" with Florence Henderson in episode 107 and "The Butterfly," a poem read by Rowlf in episode 120.
On Sesame Street the creatures were the subject of the "Elmo's World: Butterflies" episode, the Elmo storybook Flutter By, Butterfly, a Sesame Street pageant on "The Life of a Butterfly," and the street stories of Episode 3896 and Episode 4628.

While sharing some similar traits, moths are a group of insects in the order Lepidoptera that are distinct and different from butterflies.
- A group of moths is featured in The Furchester Hotel episode "The Munching Moths".
