Celebrating the Music of Paul Simon is the televised celebration of an event held by "The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song" honoring Paul Simon as their first Gershwin Prize recipient. Named for George and Ira Gershwin, the award recognizes the lifetime achievement of a composer's contribution to popular music.
A star-studded cast of celebrities gathered at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., on the evening of May 23rd, 2007, and was later televised on PBS beginning on June 27th, 2007. The program was released on DVD in May 2009.
Among the celebrity tributes, Grover and Elmo make a pre-taped appearance covering "Feelin' Groovy" by Paul Simon. After the song is done, Grover notes how short the song is, remembering that he'd always heard that Paul Simon was a short song writer. The DVD release omits the pair's introduction to the song.
Other celebrities involved included Shawn Colvin, Philip Glass, Charles Grodin, Alison Krauss, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Lorne Michaels, James Taylor and Stevie Wonder.
