In Greek mythology, Charon was the ferryman of Hades. Featured in the story of "Orpheus and Eurydice", he took the newly dead from one side of the river Acheron to the other. He transported Eurydice after her death. Charmed by the music of Orpheus, Charon aided his quest by transporting the living to the other side to face Hades.
