Chia Pets are terracotta figurines that sprout chia when planted, resembling the figure's hair or fur. Originated by Joseph Enterprises in 1977, the product was popularized in the 1980s with its famous catchphrase "Ch-ch-ch-Chia."
The Chia Pet line has expanded from generic animals to likenesses of licensed characters, such as Scooby-Doo, Garfield, Bart and Homer Simpson, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
In 2015, a Disney licensed Kermit the Frog Chia Pet was released. In 2023, an Oscar the Grouch Chia Pet was announced for release in the fall.
