Chico Hamilton (1921-2013) was a jazz drummer and composer who also led his own groups, most notably a quintet consisting of himself, cellist Fred Katz, reed player Paul Horn, John Pisano on guitar, and Carson Smith on bass. Hamilton and three of the quintet members played back-up on Ken Nordine's 1957 album Word Jazz, including "Hunger Is From" (used on Sam and Friends).

Hamilton worked directly with Jim Henson on multiple animated shorts or experiments in the early 1960s, including Drums West, Shearing Animation, and Cat and Mouse (the latter two using the same soundtrack, featuring the full Chico Hamilton Quintet). Around 1963, Henson recorded audio with Hamilton for a proposed jazz-related film, "Look Jazz, See Jazz," which was never completed.[1]
