Chile is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip in the Southern Cone (with Argentina occupying the rest of the Cone). The country was conquered by Spain in the 1500s but declared independence in 1818. One of Chile's most notable contributions to world culture is poet Pablo Neruda.
As with a few other Spanish-speaking South American countries, Chile has occasionally figured on Plaza Sésamo through inserts or guest stars (such as soccer player Sebastián González). In one repeated insert, a girl in Chile shows how she and her mother make bread. (EKA: Episodio 800)
In 2010, a series of public service announcements aired, featuring Plaza Sésamo characters and Chilean celebrity Cristián de la Fuente. The spots were intended to inform and comfort children in the wake of the 2010 earthquake in Chile.
Chile has occasionally featured on Sesame Street as well, including a film insert (First: Episode 4506) in which a girl compares how she and her cousin in Chile live.
