Chirpley is a bird friend of Big Bird, mentioned occasionally during Season 7 and Season 8 of Sesame Street before appearing on-camera in Episode 1074. He doesn't talk, only speaking in whistles.
Chirpley doesn't live on the street itself, but on Apple Avenue. Big Bird goes to his birthday party in Episode 0888, though he is initially afraid to do so having never ridden on the bus for such a long distance before. According to Episode 1003, Chirpley was the one who taught Big Bird to play checkers. In Episode 1074, Big Bird (sad that he doesn't know a second language) meets with Chirpley and a fellow feathered friend relating an anecdote in "bird-ese" about Chirpley's cousin flying into a kite they mistook for a bird; both the cousin and the kite were unharmed.
The puppet used for Chirpley was previously seen as Waldo Woodpecker.
