"Comedy Tonight," the opening number from the Sondheim musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, was written as a last-minute addition to the show, expressly for the purpose of informing the audience that the show was, in fact, a comedy. It was originally performed on Broadway by The Muppet Show guest star Zero Mostel. It was later used as the opening number for the revue Side By Side By Sondheim. It has since found itself employed on many occasions as the opening number for charity galas (including on one occasion being performed by the Queen Elizabeth II puppet from Spitting Image).

A chorus of monsters and Whatnot criminals perform "Comedy Tonight" on episode 103 of The Muppet Show while chasing each other around on what looks like the set of a scary movie.

The Muppets in the number include Snake Frackle, Blue Frackle, Green Frackle, Lenny the Lizard, Beautiful Day Monster, Crazy Harry, Svengali, Mary Louise, Clown, Green Scoff, Gorgon Heap, Miss Kitty, Droop, Blue Scoff, and several Whatnots.
