The Common Ground Awards have been recognizing outstanding achievements in international conflict resolution since 1998. Established by Search for Common Ground, an organization that works to transform the way the world deals with conflict, the award is given to those who are able to find common ground between divergent parties, and bring future efforts to new heights.

On November 1st, 2006, during a non-televised ceremony hosted by Kathleen Turner at the United Nations in New York City, Search for Common Ground presented Gary Knell and Sesame Workshop with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Present for a demonstration of what it means for people to find common ground, Grover assisted Knell on stage, lending his expertise as Global Grover on the subject.
