Ernie tells the viewer to watch and listen for Cookie Monster so he won't take the cookie which Ernie just got from Hooper's Store.
Ernie encounters a machine that reads "Your Fortune Told. Insert One Cookie." Not realizing that Cookie Monster is inside the machine, he inserts the cookie. Some munching noises are heard, and a card comes out that says, "You will soon be kissed by a grateful Cookie Monster."

In the version broadcast first (and most reuses), after Ernie reads his fortune, Cookie Monster emerges from the machine, kisses him, says "Thank you for the cookie, Ernie," and exits right.
The version of the sketch used in Episodes 0835 and 1177, Ernie reads the fortune, says, "Oh no!," Cookie Monster kisses and thanks him, and exits right. The sketch ends with a brief musical sting.
Beginning with Episode 2017, Ernie's dialogue is dubbed to say that David sold him the cookie.
