Ernie presents to the viewer a contraption he calls a "funny looking thing" that consists of a cookie on a lever inside a box that has a hole in the top. He also demonstrates that he has a Cookie Monster, explaining that it will be his job to figure out how to get the cookie from inside the box.
Ernie leaves to let Cookie Monster figure it out. He observes that there's a hole up top where he can get the cookie out, but finds that he can't reach the cookie where it is. Quickly coming up with a solution, Cookie Monster begins to wind up a physical blow when Ernie stops him to explain that he has to get the cookie out without breaking anything. Cookie Monster decides he likes his way better and continues his course of action. Ernie stops him again to sweeten the deal: if he can get the cookie out without breaking anything, he'll reward him with a whole box of cookies.
Cookie Monster accepts the deal and begins to investigate the contraption. He realizes that when he pushes the lever down, the cookie rises up to the top, reachable from the hole. He tries a couple times, but he's not fast enough to get the cookie before it drops down again. When he asks Ernie to cooperate with him, Ernie presents a new condition: he has to solve this puzzle by himself.
When Ernie leaves again, Cookie Monster discovers a brick next to the box and soon works out that it's heavy enough to keep one side of the lever down when he walks away. With the cookie in place near the hole, Cookie Monster grabs it and eats it. When Ernie returns, Cookie Monster is proud for having used his noggin to solve the problem. As promised, Ernie rewards him with a box of cookies, which Cookie Monster proceeds to eat whole.
