The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists and a title held by multiple individuals since the 14th century. The 14th Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) has been incumbent since 1940 and, as traditional, was also head of the government of Tibet. Due to military and political encroachment by China, he has led a government in exile in India since 1959. Among his many accomplishments, the Dalia Lama co-authored the book The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World with another global spiritual leader, Desmond Tutu.
