Dances with Wolves was a 1990 film based on a book of the same name. They both tell the story of a Civil War-era United States Army lieutenant who travels to the American frontier to find a military post and eventually befriends a local Sioux tribe. The movie won seven Academy Awards.

- A Pig and a Wolf are reluctant to dance together on an episode of "Monsterpiece Theater" on Sesame Street, in a nod to the film/book.
- The movie was also part of a series of interstitials made in 1999 which ran on the Odyssey Channel and were later released on Best of the Muppet Show as "Movie Mania."
