Davy Crockett (1786-1836) was a pioneer, frontiersman, and soldier who served in Congress (opposing Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal act) and later died at the battle of the Alamo.
Already enshrined as a larger than life folk hero in his lifetime, with sayings and accounts of his exploits published in almanacs, while trading cards for clipper ships with his likeness and plays about his life sprang up in the years following his death. The Disney anthology TV series, for "Frontierland" segments, portrayed Davy Crockett (with a ballad about how he killed a bear when he was only three) and started a craze for coonskin caps and other merchandise. John Wayne played the role in the 1960 film The Alamo.
