"Deck the Halls" is a secular Christmas carol with 19th-century American lyrics set to a traditional Welsh tune. The cheerful song is particularly well suited to group singing, as it features a variation on the simple and memorable "fa-la-la-la-la" lyric on every other line.
The Muppets have recorded "Deck the Halls" on several occasions.
- Rowlf the Dog sang a verse with The Jimmy Dean Show chorus in their Christmas Eve 1965 show.
- The song was performed by John Denver and the Muppets on the album A Christmas Together, and by the Sesame Street cast on the albums Merry Christmas from Sesame Street and Sesame Street Christmas Sing-Along.
- Bob, Maria, Mr. Hooper, and David sing a chorus of "Deck the Halls" as they decorate a Christmas tree in front of 123 Sesame Street in A Special Sesame Street Christmas.
- In A Muppet Family Christmas, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Grover, Kathleen the Cow (but with Gladys' voice), Bert, Ernie, Count von Count, Herry Monster, and Guy Smiley each sing a line of the song, with the rest of the Sesame Street Muppets joining in on the "fa-la-la-la-la"s. Only Oscar the Grouch refuses to join in, exclaiming "I will not sing this song!" when it comes time for his line, "Follow me in merry measure."
- The Swedish Chef and some grapes sing a line of the song in The Muppet Christmas Carol.
- Muppet carolers sing the song in It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie.
- Grandma Flutter and Tutter sing a version with new lyrics as part of the Woodland Valley Carols in the Bear in the Big Blue House episode "A Berry Bear Christmas."
- Beaker, The Swedish Chef, and Animal sang the song in Lady Gaga & the Muppets' Holiday Spectacular.
- Spoofed as "Monster Holiday" in The Furchester Hotel episode "Monster Monster Day." A monster-themed version was also performed in "A Furchester Christmas."
- Audra McDonald, Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Elmo and others in Once Upon a Sesame Street Christmas.
- Baby Beaker sings a bit of the song in the Muppet Babies episode "It's a Wonderful Elf-bot."
- Elmo, Baby Bear, Alan, and Nina sing the song in Episode 5106.
- A new version, titled "Deck the Street," was performed by Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Rosita, Rosita's Abuela, Bert, Oscar, Grover, some chickens (including Felix), and a snowman in a 2021 YouTube video. (YouTube)
