Book credit for Corduroy in Episode 0102
Don Freeman (1908-1978) was a children's author and illustrator, best remembered for the 1968 book Corduroy about a stuffed bear who is missing a button on his overalls. He wrote a 1978 sequel, A Pocket for Corduroy, while later authors (including Viola Davis) have continued the character. Corduroy featured in a 2000 Nelvana animated series aired on PBS.
Freeman's earlier book, 1964's Dandelion, was read by Gordon on Sesame Street in Episode 0056, while Jennie read Corduroy in Episode 0102.
Freeman's work as an illustrator included providing art for the writings of novelist and short story writer William Saroyan, as well as the cover and color art for James Thurber's 1945 book The White Deer. He contributed cartoons to The New York Times and elsewhere. He shifted gradually towards children's works, co-writing early titles Chuggy the Blue Caboose and Pet of the Met with wife Lydia Freeman.
