Ed Shaughnessy (1927-2013) was a noted big band and jazz drummer. From the 1940s through the 1960s, he performed in bands helmed by the likes of Jack Teagarden, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and Tommy Dorsey. He later drummed under Doc Severinsen on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and once had a drummers duel with Buddy Rich on the series. Shaughnessy's association with Jim Henson began in 1965, on Time Piece, performing the film's percussion score along with George Devens.
Shaugnessy subsequently became a studio drummer with Joe Raposo, working with him on numerous Sesame Street tracks and other recordings. During this period, he would report the titles of each song he recorded to his children, Danny and Jimmy, to let them know "which songs Daddy made."[1]
