Edward Asner (1929-2021) was an Emmy award-winning actor best known for playing Lou Grant, first on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and then on his own Lou Grant spin-off series. In the early '90s, Asner began a prolific second career as a voice-over artist on animated series, including Superman, The Simpsons, Spider-Man, and Batman: The Animated Series.
Asner performed the "Evil Georgie" voice in the Dinosaurs episode "Georgie Must Die." In 2021, he made a posthumous cameo in the special Muppets Haunted Mansion, appearing as Claude during the "Rest In Peace" musical number. The special was dedicated in Asner's memory, and The Muppets social media described him as "a great friend of the Muppets" at the time of his passing.[1][2]
Other credits include voicing Jabba the Hutt in a radio version of Star Wars, playing Santa Claus in Elf, the father to Bette Midler's Rose in the made-for-TV version of Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim's Gypsy, and the voice of Carl Fredricksen in Pixar's Up.
Asner had also hosted Saturday Night Live, and made appearances on the television series Dharma & Greg, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Night of 100 Stars, and Shelley Duvall's Tall Tales & Legends.
