Gonzo with a vintage El Paso travel sticker, upper left on suitcase

El Paso is the sixth largest city in Texas, situated on the Rio Grande border between the United States of America and Mexico. It borders New Mexico with the nearest city being Las Cruces. It is home to the University of Texas at El Paso and Fort Bliss military installation. Quirkier claims to fame include the birthplace of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and the filming location of Manos, Hands of Fate, a cult favorite bad movie thanks to Mystery Science Theater 3000.

  • In the Winter 1986 issue of Muppet Magazine, Gonzo runs away from the magazine to stay with the Cosby Kids. He's found freezing in the snow, his luggage decorated with stickers from his travels, including El Paso. The sticker, in the shape of a cowboy hat, is from the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, sporting the slogan "Sunshine Playground of the Border." The slogan was used from the mid 1930s through at least 1975 (and the actual sticker design dates to the 30s or 40s).
  • Whether coincidental or otherwise, a minor street in El Paso is named Kermit Lane (Kermit Ln).
