Elmo's Gift puppy

Elmo's puppy and its plush replica.

Elmo's Apartment is a 2001 Sesame Street storybook in the "Elmo's Neighborhood" series.

Plot[]

Elmo rushes into the house while Mae and Louie are decorating for his birthday party. They ask him if he's ready for the celebration, and Elmo explains that he's looking forward to getting something that's cute, black, soft and furry like a plush, and will sleep on his bed every night.

Mae looks to Louie with concern, assuming that Elmo is hoping to get the stray puppy that's been seen around the neighborhood lately. Louie thinks he's ready for the responsibility and suggests they go out to find that dog.

After striking out at the pet shop, Elmo's parents stop at a toy store and find him a plush doll: it's cute, black, soft and furry, and will sleep on Elmo's bed every night.

Back at home, everyone arrives for the party where they play pin-the-nose on the Honker and enjoy birthday cake. When it's time for presents, Elmo receives a puzzle from Bert, a tie from Big Bird, a truck from Zoe, a fireman's helmet from Ernie, a box of paints from the Count, and a monster puppet from Herry.

Elmo opens the last gift from his parents and finds that it's cute, black, soft and furry, and will sleep on his bed every night... but it's a plush. Just as the disappointment starts to set in, a puppy that has been seen lurking around throughout the book, leaps into Elmo's lap. Elmo exclaims that he's happy his parents found his dog, but they explain that the dog found him.

That night, and every night after, the little dog slept soundly, warm and safe on Elmo's bed.
