Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was a poet who was little published in her lifetime, but posthumous publication of her prolific writings (almost 1,800 pieces) raised her profile to that of one of America's foremost poets. Major themes in her work range from nature (particularly flowers) to illness and death.
Dickinson's modern legacy and influence has extended to include a 1971 commemorative stamp, plays and biopics, and the establishment of the Emily Dickinson Museum in 2003.
