Marshall Mathers (b. 1972), known by his stage name Eminem, is a rapper who gained mainstream popularity in the late 1990s.
His studio albums have earned over 50 platinum certifications, most of them having charted in number one best-selling positions on the charts. He has been seen as a controversial figure, but is also credited for having broken racial barriers and popularizing hip hop in middle America. He has won over a dozen Grammy Awards and received an Academy Award for "Lose Yourself" from the 2002 Curtis Hanson film 8 Mile which he also starred in (with Eugene Byrd).
