SCENE 1 Gordon, Bob and Susan find that Hooper's Store is closed, and observe several packages on the doorstep. Susan, having come from the bakery, overheard that Mr. Hooper's sister had a cake made for him. The packages at the door must be presents, ergo, it must be Mr. Hooper's birthday. They decide to give him a surprise party. When Mr. Hooper shows up, they pretend not to know that it's his birthday, which offends him.
