SCENE 2 At Hooper's Store, Oscar prepares to interview a number of Grouches lined up outside. Oscar asks the first applicant what he'd do if he were handed a flowerpot with a flower inside. The applicant says he'd throw it in the wastebasket, but Oscar says a real Grouch would throw away the flower and the pot, and throw the dirt on the floor โ€“ which he does, to Mr. Hooper's dismay.

The next applicant comes in. Oscar asks what he'd do with a dirty old torn shirt, and he says he'd wear it to the opera. Oscar counters that a real Grouch would tear the shirt up even further and hang it up on the wall. Next!

Oscar asks the third applicant what they'd do with a bunch of old newspapers. The applicant proceeds to tear them to shreds, dirtying up the store. Oscar lauds this display of Grouchiness, and gives the applicant the job โ€“ but the applicant makes the mistake of showing gratitude (a big Grouch no-no). Oscar concludes that it's up to him to keep Sesame Street grouchy.
