SCENE 1 Big Bird goes to Hooper's Store to buy a few things and finds Bob, Maria, and Gordon already in line. They each give David a complicated order, then leave to pick them up later. Big Bird is impressed and asks David how he manages to take all of the orders without writing them down; David tells him that he's been working at the store for a long time and has learned how to remember everything. Big Bird manages to remember everybody's orders perfectly when David suggests that he is capable of doing the same; the only thing he forgets is what he wanted to buy in the first place.

It becomes a little awkward when David and Maria exchange gifts, but it all turns out okay as they both pretend that they are seeing their gifts for the first time and agree to share them as bookends.
