SCENE 2, cont'd He takes another call when Big Bird comes in with a broken clock. With Luis otherwise occupied, Maria takes the clock, fixes it, and hands it back to Big Bird. Luis gets off the phone, notices what's happened and thanks Maria for helping, "I didn't know you knew how to fix things." A kid comes in to ask about his broken wagon wheel, but Luis hasn't gotten to it yet. Before he can protest, Maria fixes the wagon and sends the kid on his way.

Luis cuts her off, and tells her she's hired. She shakes his hand and hugs him saying he won't regret it. He asks how she is at fixing bicycles; Maria takes her coat off and begins working right away, immediately relieving some of Luis's stress.
