SCENE 2 | Big Bird, Bob, Maria, and the kids learn some weather-related signs from the Little Theatre group. Maria wonders how deaf people are able to communicate with each other in the dark. They explain that they do so through touch, and Ed demonstrates by having Bob close his eyes and signing "How are you?" into Bob's hands. Linda then explains that deaf people are also able to use lights for their doorbells and telephones instead of sounds; lip reading and occasional talking helps with communication as well. Big Bird is confused, so Robert (a hearing member of the company) interprets as Julianna tells him to imagine not being able to hear things. In Big Bird's imagination, he walks by such situations as Biff jackhammering the sidewalk, David playing his guitar as Oscar retaliates with his bugle, Bob chatting with him, the Count counting nails at the Fix-it Shop, and his thunder and lightning disrupting Maria's hammering. Although he can't hear any of those things, he can still pick up what's going on by observing. | |
