SCENE 1 | “Oscar van Gogh” finishes painting some realistic looking trash cans and garbage bags on the outside wall of Hooper's Store, thinking it’ll make people upset and grouchy. He ducks out of sight when Gordon, Susan, Maria, and Luis come by having a discussion. They notice the new images painted on the wall and figure that Oscar is the culprit, but instead of getting angry they are all inspired to do some painting on the wall as well, thinking it'll give the place a fresh new look. Oscar returns, disgusted that everybody thinks that what he did was a good idea.

He undoes his error by magically producing a fancy cityscape on the wall for her with another “a la peanut butter sandwiches” spell, but Maria tells him he still doesn't understand what she wants. She explains that the painting is supposed to be a community project - a collaboration of everyone working together in the neighborhood, not just done with a few magic passes. Mumford thinks he finally gets it, and magically summons everyone in the neighborhood to appear, all taking a turn painting the wall, leaving no room for Maria. "I can't win," she moans.
