SCENE 1 The Count sits alone on Sesame Street counting his own sad sighs, each of which is followed by a faint peal of thunder. When Maria asks him what's wrong, he explains that he's in love with the Countess von Numeral who lives above the drug store: she's Transylvanian, and she loves to count. However, he's sad because she hasn't sent him any signals about her own feelings. Maria suggests that he tells her how he feels because women like the direct approach these days, but the Count is old fashioned, and insists on wooing her. Maria recommends bringing her flowers...

SCENE 1, cont'd Down the street, the Count approaches the Countess von Numeral. She wears a monocle and a tiara, and she has "small pointy ears," and "delicate little fangs." She sits alone counting her fingers, each count followed by a bell tone. As he begins to make his advance, he emphasizes his intention to get a kiss from her in exchange for flowers. He greets her — "You are beuatiful when you are counting!" — and bends down to kiss her fingers. They count them together with each kiss, each followed by thunder and a bell tone. She giggles as she accepts a dozen roses that the Count says he has counted. She begins to count them herself, tossing each one aside as she counts them. The Count hangs his head in defeat, "Curses! This is not what I had in mind."
HubleyCatandMouseChase

SCENE 2 Maria finds the Count counting sad sighs again; he's up to over one hundred when he sobs into Maria's shoulder. The Count explains his failure, and she again suggests the direct approach: tell her that you love her. But the Count is insistent on wooing her, and remembers that in courtship, if flowers don't work, you bring a woman candies. With a flourish of his cape, he heads on down the street again...

SCENE 3 Now the Count is counting sobs, while Maria consoles him. He explains that the Countess only likes counting things, but she doesn't like the Count. She'll count anything: she counted the flowers, and she counted the candies. This gives Maria an idea, which she shares with the Count in a whisper. He makes his way down the street again to give it a try...

SCENE 3, cont'd The Count announces himself to the Countess, and declares that he has one more thing for her to Count. He gives her a kiss, which is followed by a moment of silence... until she counts it: "one kiss!" The bell chimes and thunder sounds as she asks for more. The Count obliges and she continues to count his kisses. The Count provides his own commentary — "I hope she can count to a hundred!" — and the scene ends with a swell of romantic music.
