SCENE 1 At the Fix-it Shop, Maria has a headache while studying. The Count gives her a few helpful tips, counting each one as he lists them off. Maria believes the Count is only doing this so he has something to count and doesn't care about her issue at all. She tells him to leave, stating it might make her feel better.

Outside, he encounters Sherlock Hemlock trying to solve the mystery of the “mud puddle monster”, who left some strange footprints. Big Bird doesn’t realize that they’re his footprints, so he assumes the monster went to Hooper’s, since the tracks lead there. David fills him in, and Sherlock thinks he has solved the case. Big Bird now proudly thinks he’s the monster, but David disagrees.
