SCENE 1 | At Hooper's Store, David fills a large jar with dry beans, explaining to Maria it's for a contest: whoever guesses the number correctly wins a free lunch. Maria guesses 2,000 as David takes the beans and a sign advertising the contest in front of the store window. Big Bird arrives shortly after to watch the store while David studies, and David gives him instructions to heat up the soups and stews for today's lunch specials, as well as writing the items on the menu. Big Bird neglects to check the food in the kitchen, instead finding some bacon and bread nearby, and thinks it won't be enough to serve the customers. He then notices the jar of dry beans on the window and gets inspired.

To David's horror Big Bird has cooked and served all of the beans for the contest to the customers. David explains that the beans still needed to be counted, but luckily Big Bird had counted all 2,028 beans while cooking, meaning he gets the free lunch.

Oscar comes from his can and fumes over their gesture - they've given him exactly what he wanted, which is no way to treat a Grouch. He yells that he hates birthdays, but complies with blowing out the candle; he wishes everyone would leave him alone.
