SCENE 1 | The Count has been placed in charge of Hooper's Store, grateful for the opportunity as there are so many things he can count. He counts the glasses and plates he’s just cleaned, and then the beachballs, dolls and trucks David has out for sale. He comes to realize that if products are sold off, they will no longer be around for him to count.
SCENE 1 cont'd | Sure enough, Big Bird comes in to buy a ball for his upcoming trip to the beach but the Count talks him out of it, claiming nobody plays with them anymore and lists the “reasons” why. He persuades Big Bird to save his money and dig in the sand instead, so Big Bird finds a pail and shovel to purchase. The Count insists that he dig with his hands (or rather wings and feathers), as the pail “barely holds any sand at all” and recommends he uses a big bucket. Big Bird agrees and requests one, and the Count (excited that his plan is working) informs him that they don’t have any and sends the confused bird over to the hardware store. Once he’s gone, the Count sighs of relief.

SCENE 2 | Olivia comes into the store to buy a pencil. The Count offers the use of the store pencil tied to the soda spigot, but she wants a set of new ones she can take home, pointing to the glass container holding six pencils on the shelf. She takes them and counts them herself.
SCENE 2 cont'd | Determined not to let the pencils out of his sight, the Count opens the register and plops in some money, claiming he's already bought them all. Olivia grows suspicious and gets the impression that the Count doesn’t want her to buy them and decides to go somewhere else to buy pencils, making the Count delighted.

SCENE 3 | Gordon comes to Hooper's for an apple to go with his lunch, but once again the Count begins acting like there aren’t any in the store. Gordon reminds him where they’re kept, so the Count now claims that the apples aren’t any good and recommends he go buy one from Mr. Macintosh instead. (“Why, compared to his apples, these taste like old tennis balls!”) Gordon points out that it’s Mr. Macintosh’s day off, and asks why he can’t buy an apple right there. The Count gets desperate and responds by acting like Gordon doesn’t look too well (“Look, your hair is fallen out!”) and should go home.
SCENE 3 cont'd | Just as Gordon begins suspecting something strange going on with the Count, Big Bird and Olivia return and the three talk about their failed attempts of buying something. They ask the Count what's going on, and he admits his strategy of not selling anything so he'll still be able to count them. As he breaks down crying, the others explain to him that things are in the store for people to buy and assure him that there will be a lot of other things left for him to count. Big Bird gives him a great idea - count all the items he sells! The Count loves the idea and starts hawking many more items they could all buy.
