SCENE 1 Oscar has applied a new sign to his trash can reading: "Grouch Area - No Singing, Laughing, Playing, Dancing or Fun Allowed." After showing it to the viewer, he goes back inside to retrieve his bullhorn so he can call everyone over to see his new rule. In the process, he slams his can shut which causes the "NO" to fall off the sign. When he comes back out, he calls David, Bob, Linda, Timi, and the kids over so they can read the sign and goes back into his can. The others immediately obey the sign and start doing all the things the sign was supposed to forbid in the yard.

SCENE 1 cont'd Bob comes across the loose "NO" on the ground when Oscar comes back out having heard all the noise. He asks if they’re all going to stop everything, and Bob responds by simply giving him back the "NO."

He ropes Linda and Timi into taking it, and asks Linda a series of questions about things Grouches like, all to which Linda responds "no." Oscar deems her an honorary Grouch - not because she likes grouchy things, but because of how often she said "no." Linda responds by grabbing and shaking Oscar, who claims she's beautiful when she's angry... which results in Linda shoving him back into his can.

If not, they have to stay away from him for the rest of the day. The one catch is that they must repeat the sentence, a Grouch tongue twister, with a mouthful of three soda crackers. Everyone (literally) blows it except for Linda, who signs the sentence.
