SCENE 1 Maria and Olivia follow a strange noise to Oscar's trash can, where inside, Oscar and his Grouch pals are chopping up his piano to use as firewood. Mr. Hooper comes by to drop off marshmallows. When they see smoke arising form the can, Maria rushes to douse the fire with a bucket of water. Oscar is angry at first, but realizes how much better it is having a soggy campfire. He and the Grouches start singing a campfire song to themselves.

They both describe their rotten day, which they soon start laughing over. Maria comes into the store, also in a bad moon. She considers leaving, seeing how good everyone else feels, but they encourage her to stay and help cheer her up.
