Big Bird hears her speaking Spanish to it, since her friend also speaks Spanish and Maria feels it would make the bird more comfortable. As she goes into the store, the canary talks to Big Bird in Spanish. Big Bird is able to learn the words for canary (canario), cage (jaula), birdseed (semillas), water (agua) and sing (canta). Maria returns and doubts Big Bird's story, until she hears him repeat the words back.

Oscar emerges, glad to see none of his Grouch friends around. He explains that his nephew Goody Grouch (short for "Goodriddance") has been sent to him to learn how to be a proper Grouch. He's been sent to get a quart of mud from around the corner. Goody stroll back and gleefully introduces himself to the locals. He reveals he got a nice quart of milk instead.
