As she describes it and why she's getting rid of it, Big Bird is listening in nearby, and because it matches his description — it's big, yellow, and sometimes loses feathers — he thinks they're talking about him. As David and Maria make their way out to the arbor to carry it the rest of the way to the trash pick-up, Big Bird confronts them angrily. He says he's not lumpy, as described, and if they don't like yellow, he'll paint himself orange or purple. Maria explains she was talking about her old sofa, that she loves Big Bird, and continues to complain about the furniture. Understanding now, Big Bird scolds Maria over talking about her sofa that way; she may hurt its feelings.
