SCENE 1 Oscar isn't enjoying his night, as Buffy and Cody are singing and having fun while staying over in his can. Mr. Hooper locks up the store for the night, then realizes he's left his house keys inside; Luis won't be around to help open the store until tomorrow. David wraps up some painting in the garage and claims his keys are in his other pants...which are also in the store. This means he can't go home either, nor can Barkley, who was going to spend the night while the paint dries. The two think of who else they could stay with - Maria's cousin Mercedes is occupying her spare bedroom and Bob is out of town playing a concert. Olivia invites them to stay at Gordon and Susan's apartment, but a broken water pipe has everything inside soaked.

SCENE 1 cont'd Oscar sees how sour their attitudes have gotten and senses having them as guests might be good. He applies a "Grouchaway Inn" sign to his can and invites them to stay over. They all agree his can is the last place they'd want to be, but quickly change their minds when a thunder clap bangs overhead.

SCENE 2 Oscar, outside of the can, listens with glee as the adults complain about their living arrangements, as well as about each other. Oscar goes to get Grundgetta so she can witness it for herself. While he's gone, everyone agrees to make the best of the situation and they all start singing "Home in the Can" together. Oscar returns with Grundgetta, who complains about being dragged from her mudbath to hear the happy sounds of singing and laughter.

SCENE 3 Oscar dons his formal wear as Bruno the Trashman arrives to chauffeur him to the Grouch Cha-Cha Palace for some boogying. The adults wish to be left behind, but Oscar explains the dance hall is holding a BYOC (Bring Your Own Can) night for their annual "Trashcan of the Year" contest, where the grand prize is a trip to the National Dump in Washington, D.C. Everyone complains as Bruno carries the can off.

SCENE 4 Oscar and Bruno arrive at the Grouch Cha-Cha-Palace, where admission is $1 per person. Oscar tells the Grouch box office worker that he only needs tickets for himself and Bruno, while the adults protest in the can over Oscar's lies. Oscar tries to dupe the worker into thinking the voices are himself or his stereo, but the others drag him into the can. They pop up one by one to count off how many there actually are. Oscar doesn't have $8 to get them all inside, so the adults suggest they go back to Sesame Street and sleep instead.
This scene, as well as behind the scenes footage of the taping, was released on 40 Years of Sunny Days.
