SCENE 1 Maria needs to place an important call, but every telephone on the block seems to be out of order, except for Oscar's, which is spotted being used in conversation. Maria approaches him to use the phone, but he's too wrapped up in his call. He eventually hands her the receiver, which is also broken - he was simply pretending to talk to someone.
