SCENE 1 | Big Bird is getting a new telephone installed in his nest (having dropped his last phone in a goldfish bowl). The phone man (Richard Hunt) arrives to install the phone, but Big Bird can't make up his mind whether it should be hung over or under the guest birdhouse already nailed to the post. The phone man becomes slightly miffed with Big Bird's indecisiveness: "Why do I always get the birds? Bruce gets the rabbits!" Big Bird finally resolves to put the phone where the birdhouse is, but now can't decide whether the birdhouse should be placed over or under it.

Big Bird happens to have a "TELEPHONE" sign to place near it, as well as one reading "BIRDHOUSE" to help his feathered friends find it. The Canary Brothers fly in to use the birdhouse, but instead head straight to the telephone and try to get inside; Big Bird realizes that some other birds can't read.
