SCENE 1 On the steps of 123 Sesame Street, Susan and Gladys the Cow are talking about a dance audition, when Sherlock Hemlock and Elmo announce that they're on the case to solve who left a footprint on Sherlock's newspaper. They compare everyone's shoes and discover the print belongs to Gladys, who admits she must have stepped on the newspaper when she was practicing for her audition.

Having been trained by Sherlock Hemlock, Detective Elmo is ready for his first mystery - The Case of What Grandma is Doing. He observes the clues - tape measure, a ball of yarn and knitting needles. Elmo comes to the conclusion that she is kitting something for him, but she corrects him - she's making a sweater for Miles. Seeing how crestfallen he is, she offers to knit him a sweater too.
