SCENE 2 Gordon helps Elmo write the word CAT. Telly then emerges from below the table, dressed in a makeshift cat disguise. Elmo explains that his mommy is allowing him to get a cat, so he's using Telly to practice on ("You're the guinea pig, huh?" says Gordon). He's prepared the sign as well to ensure people recognize Telly as a cat. Telly thinks something might go wrong, but as he has his fur patted, plays with string, and drinks milk, he gets into the role. Elmo presents him with a rubber mouse and Telly scampers.

Muppets Ernie & Bert β€” Ernie can't sleep, so Bert tells him to count sheep. Ernie tries to count sheep, but it's dull -- so he starts counting fire engines. The noise from the imaginary fire engine wakes Bert up. Bert says that Ernie's waking up the whole neighborhood, and tells him to count something quieter. Ernie counts balloons -- but the balloon gets bigger and bigger, finally bursting with a huge explosion that wakes Bert up again.

SCENE 3 Elmo looks around for Telly, who hides under some newspapers by Oscar's trash can. Gina happens by and hears a hiccup coming from the papers, finding Telly. He admits he's hiding from Elmo, finding being a cat isn't all it's cracked up to be. She tells him all he has to do is tell Elmo he no longer wants to be a cat. When Elmo comes by again, Telly confesses the truth and Elmo is very understanding, especially because he doesn't need Telly's help anymore. He urges them to follow him to the arbor, where his new kitty is waiting for them to see.

Maria explains to him that just because Elmo loves Shirley, they can't get married; marriage is for grown-ups, not animals. She lifts his spirits by inviting him to Hooper's Store for some ice cream (and a saucer of milk for Shirley). On the way there, Elmo jokes that he loves ice cream so much he wants to marry it.
