SCENE 1 | Big Bird is especially happy because Maria and Luis are going to take him to the park to play today. Maria comes over with some unfortunate news - she and Luis have some important work to do (such as fixing David's toaster and making an important phone call) and can't take him to the park. Big Bird begins to pout and believes that he's not important to her. He tries to drown her out, until she suggests he do something else, like write a story. She sits him down and provides him with a blue crayon (his choice).
SCENE 1 cont'd | Big Bird decides to use the story to vent his frustrations over Maria's broken promise. He creates his own avian superhero - Blue Bird! As the story begins, some kids visit the playground, which is covered entirely with telephones and toasters. Blue Bird arrives on the scene and deduces this is the work of "The Toaster Fixer Phone Caller" (Maria), who litters playgrounds with telephones and toasters so that kids won't get a chance to play. He poses as a tree and when the TFPC arrives, he chases her until she gives up. The playgrounds of the city are saved and the mayor extends his personal gratitude toward Blue Bird.
SCENE 1 cont'd | The story has made Big Bird feel better, when Maria and Luis come in. They've finished their work, but want to tell Big Bird something first - Maria is going to have a baby! Big Bird learns how the process will happen and, despite having to wait nine months, looks forward to having the baby's birthday party. Big Bird no longer feels like going to the park and instead rushes out to tell everyone of the good news.
